Thief phones for help after baby surprise

A CAR thief called the owner’s sister-in-law for help when he realised there was a baby in the back seat, and she wouldn’t stop crying.

Thirteen-week-old Elly Harold was the subject of a frantic search after her mother’s car was stolen from outside an electrical repair shop at Alexandra Hills, in Brisbane’s east, at 12.30pm (AEST) today.

Her mother Jodie says she ducked into the shop to pay for TV repairs and left Elly asleep in the car with the air conditioning on and the keys in the ignition.

When she returned, the car was gone, beginning an agonising ordeal that lasted almost three hours.

“I walked out and the car was gone, and I just said, ‘my car, my baby, my car’s gone, my baby … where’s my baby?’,” Mrs Harold said.

Police issued a statewide “amber alert”, sending a description of the car to the media and asking the public to be on the lookout.

But realising he had unwittingly abducted a baby, the thief used Mrs Harold’s mobile phone to call her sister-in-law, and told her that baby Elly would not stop crying.

The mother just ducked into the shops. Hang on you left a 13 week old child in the car alone. What the hell are you thinking.
