Fraudsters behind bogus Dell email – Security – Technology – theage.com.au
Dells customer support centre was overloaded this morning, after emails appearing to come from Dell lobbed into inboxes around the country to inform recipients their credit card had been charged $865.
But the email, which purported to be a confirmation from Dell UK of an order for a “Canon DF-E037 8.0 MP Digital Camera”, turned out to be a phishing attack.
The attackers directed people to a malicious website which they said would allow them to “check the order in your profile”.
A reader writing to smh.com.au this morning said: “All of Dells phone lines are returning a busy signal – no calls getting through.”
Dell moved quickly to inform its customers of the fraudulent email, posting an alert on the front page of Dell.com.au and a message on its global Direct2Dell blog.
