FOUR-WHEEL-DRIVES have a greater propensity to roll over than conventional sedans, with their drivers more than three times more likely to be killed in a roll, latest research has found.
The study into four-wheel-drive safety, commissioned by the RACV and undertaken by the Monash University Accident Research Centre, also found the occurrence of roll-overs trebled in higher speed zones of 80 km/h and above.
Drivers of four-wheel-drives aged under 30 were at much higher risk of being involved in a roll-over. The study investigated the injuries and deaths in 660,378 crashes, of all vehicle types, in Australia and New Zealand between 1999 and 2003.
