Are you scared of Google

One Sydney web development professional, who did not want to be named because he does business with Google, says: “People are very scared of it.

If you’re not listed in Google, you’re f—ed. But they keep changing the ground rules.” Google regularly updates its secret search algorithm, which can dramatically affect a site’s ranking, but says its searches are not rigged and sponsored links are clearly marked.

Thought this was an interesting comment. I suppose I am not scared of Google as such, but when they do change their ground rules, it makes life difficult.

One of my sites was receiving, on average 800 visitors per day. Since one of these Google changes took place, I am now flat out getting 100 visitors to the site.

Of course less visitors less adsense revenue.

Google Adsense allows webmasters to place ads on their website and to earn money.

I have been running Google Adsense on my sites for many years now starting off with SASA.

SASA is a not for profit community organisation providing information and support to thousands of stepfamilies each year. Google adsense paid for all of our hosting costs.

We developed more websites and before too long I was receiving an income from Adsense.

The majority of sites that I have developed are around family, and as you know family is not a high paying keyword word. But that can be over come by increasing the traffic to your site and that is what we achieved.

But, we put all our eggs in one basket relying on all our traffic to come from Google search.

What happens when that drops off.

This is the first in a series of articles trying to understand why my websites have seen a major drop of traffic in the past month. One site SASA has seen a drop of 80%.

If over a number of years you had built a successful business and if the number of customers visiting your business was quite steady you would be quite happy.

But overnight, you noticed that the number of customers coming to your shop dropped by over 80% you would be quickly looking for the reasons behind such a dramatic drop.

In my situation the reason is that the number of visitors being sent via Google has dried up, Google has turned off the tap and only a trickle of visitors is coming to my site.

Why has this happened? What have I done wrong for this to happen?

Hopefully over the next couple of weeks, I might find some answers

IF you’ve ever been shocked by search results for your name, Google has come up with a way to save face online.

The web search giant is giving people influence over what information turns up in searches on their names.

The company began this week featuring Google profiles, created voluntarily by users, at the bottoms of US “name-query” pages.

“It’s no secret that from time to time many of us have searched on Google for our name or someone else’s,” Google software engineer Brian Stoler said in a blog post.

“When searching for yourself to see what others would find, results can be varied and aren’t always what you want people to see. We want to make that better and give you more of a voice.”

However, the profiles don’t necessarily block bad results, which could still appear in general search results.

Profiles require users to provide personal information in order to appear on public search results.

Users can provide nicknames, work information, photos, links, and even list their “superpowers”.

Concise profiles are displayed along with results of searches on people’s names to allow a little control of one’s online image.

Google cuts 200 staff in ad slump

GOOGLE has announced it is cutting 200 jobs as the search giant continues cutting costs while producing multi-billion-dollar profits.

The layoffs are the company’s biggest ever, but still represent only a small proportion of its overall workforce of 20,000.

However it is seen as a sign that even profitable companies are being squeezed by the global downturn.

Google returned a profit of $US4.2 billion ($5.98 billion), with revenues topping $31 billion, but still needs to implement cost-cutting measures as its watches a steady drop in its comparatively stratospheric share price.

Google Inc. closed at $US353 in overnight trade.

Google is seen as vulnerable to the global recession because its revenue streams are largely tied to advertising spending, which is plummeting as the financial crisis drags on.

The latest layoffs are coming from Google’s division which sells its advertising. Previous cuts targeted contractors and recruitment specialists and eliminating a radio advertising division.

A company blog post said Google had simply hired too many staff during its rapid expansion. “Making changes of this kind is never easy – and we recognise that the recession makes the timing even more difficult for the Googlers concerned,” the company said.

How to increase your google adsense earnings

I run adsense on a number of my sites and it is proving to be a very good form of second income. Many other people are now putting the code onto their own sites which can help them to pay for hosting and domain renewal costs.

Should you run adsense on your website?

In my opinion there are many positive reasons to have these google ads on your website but there are also reasons why you may not want them on there. On the positive side you are of course likely to earn money when people click on one of the ads, this can be a useful income, however unless you have either a high traffic site or a large number of sites, you are unlikely to get rich from it.

On the negative side when people click on one of the ads it is actually taking away that visitor from your site. If you are offering a service it therefore probably is not worth signing up for adsense for that site. If the site is purely for information purposes I would say that it is worth adding the code.

How to increase your adsense earnings

There are many ways in which you can blend the adverts into your website by choosing a particular colour for the ads as an example. Placement of the ads is also quite important and there is information on the Google site which advises where to put the adverts for maximum impact.

I believe the best way to increase your earnings however is to get more traffic to the website. There are many ways of doing this:

Google adwords

You can create an advertising campaign using google adwords. You could opt to pay near enough the minimum fee per click and this will keep the costs down. People will then visit your site and hopefully click on one of the other ads, therefore making you money.

This can work very well for certain subjects, but not so well for others. It is a matter of trial and error, I always run the adwords for around a month and then evaluate if it is worth carrying on after that point.

It is obviously important that we do not spend more on our own advertising, than we are likely to earn.

Purchase a text link ad

This is becoming more and more popular as one way backward links are becoming ever more powerful in the eyes of the search engines. These type of links are however quite hard to come by.

By purchasing a text link advert you are likely to have an increase in web traffic from two avenues. Firstly from the advert itself and also from the page rank value of the backward link.

Writing articles

Writing articles can also help you to obtain more visitors to your site. Link exchange

Build a site network

If you have the time and available funds you could also consider building a network of sites, all on the same theme. Each of the sites in the network would have a link pointing to the main site. They could also have adsense on the sites thus increasing your earnings in a two-fold manner.
